Description

In this remarkable watercolour from 1974, Heinz Möseneder blends organic forms and transparent layers of colour into a harmonious whole. Vibrant shades of yellow and orange meet soft hues of green, grey and brown. The interlocking forms are reminiscent of human figures facing one another, joining together in a protective, almost intimate gesture.

Flowing transitions and bolder contours lend this portrait-format composition both a sense of lightness and stability. The light areas in the centre seem to glow from within, whilst darker arcs of colour envelop the subject and lend it a sense of spatial depth. This creates a dynamic balance between intimacy and openness, movement and stillness.

‘Unit II’ is one of Heinz Möseneder’s most notable early works. Even here, key themes of his later work are already evident: the connection between the body and nature, the pursuit of harmony, and the idea of a deeper, all-encompassing sense of connectedness. As such, the work is a striking and rare testament to his early artistic development.
